Well it has been sometime since i re-blogged.
Forgive me as i have been out enjoying my final days
picking folk up from the airport and really just mellowing out over here
before the great return to the greyness of the motherland. Urghhh
SO thought I would get my teeth cleaned as it's been a moon or so
and its much cheaper over here.
As you can imagine I checked everything before hand as
I know w wee bit about sanitation having a degree in biology.
It was comforting in the dentist as the first thing i saw was an autoclave which
is an absolute for cleaning their instruments.
I have the worlds most sensitive teeth so i
explained all this to the PHD man that was dealing with my teeth.
He smiled back at me with those million dollar crowns that
always make you feel happy and yet hopeless as your teeth
look like something from the nightmare on elm street.
Anyway the place was small and very clean,
Which is more than can be said for the bathroom
which had last years faeces in it. Dr Adel had a wonderful reputation
and all the ex pats gave him glowing reviews.
The strange thing was he had a tv screen right there in front of
where he worked. Not for me but for him to watch his
arabic tv soaps and 1970s movies. It seems to be a must in Arabia for folk to
sit and watch the teeth whether they are cleaning teeth, meat , or chicken.
I mentioned that i didn't understand Arabic so the volume went down a Little anyway.
Before i knew it he was in and doing his thing with what looked like very
clean 6" nail. Arghh yes they are my teeth. Fuckers hurt when i take a pee so
it's always a chore going to the dentist. I must say he was rather good. no real pain
other than what i experience when i eat glass. He took so much care and did a very thorough scan.
Then halfway through I heard Kermit the frog.
Kermit the fucking frog?
Was I tripping yet again. Good god Imagine what i would be like if i actually took
any drugs. Nope it was his telephone singing the Muppet song. It seems that all Arabians
find it necessary to have the most ridiculous ring tones. Regardless of intelligence and
position. So he answered it spitting vowels everywhere like they do in Arabia and get back
to the job in hand.
Needless to say my mouth fits my looks now very
charming for a beater.

death
sadly a young Korean diver died at the
blue hole here out in Egypt. I've dived it may times
and can empathise with what it must have been like.
She was diving out of our camp so the mood was somewhat
somber and realistic. It's always a chance to grasp meaning
and insight...
Also one of the silent masters passed.
Maurice Graham, who began hitching rides on trains as a
teenager and was known as the "King of the Hobos," died Saturday
at a nursing home in Napoleon, Ohio, his family said.
He was 89 and had recently suffered a stroke.
AS my lovely mother says

The furry cup
It's been three years since i have been diving
which is a little odd for me
at my lowest times I would always meditate
back to the deeper blue and it rarely disappointed me.
Today was just a check dive so I had some fun at 6 m
just doing all the skills that I had become a little rusty on.
Masking, fin pivots etc...
It felt like i had hardly been out of the water
I'm lucky in that I find diving like most sports
pretty easy and very enjoyable.
I can honestly say that it was a a pleasure
to just pay under the blue for a while.
There's always something remarkable in the water
and it's very liberating.
I spent the whole day on Wednesday web designing
whatever you do don't tell folk that you're a web designer
or you may get roped into helping them do there biz site.
http://www.oxygene.se/Index.asp?Action=ShowArticle&ArticleID=320&FolderID=0&UnitID=65
it was fun though even if i didn't have any of
my equipment here.
I have been rather lazy of late
just chilling out ....

deep blue
Hello
today could be called a very chilled day with some rather odd
occurences. As I am turning into a bit of a lardy bastard I thought I
would swim across the bay. So I turned up and walked over to an area
At the left of the bay and kit up ready foir the 600 metre swim.
It's easier with fins on but still a bit of a trek.
Across the bay in the middle there's just you and the jellyfish.
When I was younger it was full of dolphins and sharks, but now
they have all gone away to saudi for some peace. Anyway,
it's the thrill of doing it alone out in the blue abyss. Meditationg as you fin out
away from folk man and madness. (Leaving the music behind and the touts and
restaurants is quite liberating as theya re constantl trying to get you in.)
Then to stop in the middle and just drift with the slight current and look
down into my favourite blue wonder. nothing but shimmering blue and light
rays going away to the depth. Nothing like it really.
Questions running around my head are drowned out by marvel and joy.
On a lighter note later on I went to a little sandwich bar and was trying to
relax after my bay swim with a few sarnies ( with a few taiwanese chaps)
when what can only be classed as a very young camel decided to try and grab the food.
From behind my shoulder he came round and tried grabbing the fries and the left over
bread from our sandwiches.
Interesting to see an animal over 6 ft tall thats almost newborn trying to muscle
our food away. It was actually quite cute but a bit unsettling.
After a few flicks to try and get him away the owner came out
and spent a minute giving him grief and pushing him away.
After a few mins of laughter we were all
settled and watched him fart off round the street corner.
The realities of arabia
you shall have to come and see it all for yourself

vanilla sky
Today was rather odd. I took a walk down wind with some fellow travellers to a place
just south of here. It used to just have the Hilton on the land but now its a mecca for the sun seeking rich of
Europe. No sooner had we walked off the public beach and onto the strip than a security guard wanted to frisk me and ask me my room number. I sweet talked him into letting me through and we all walked off into the rich paradise
of topless Russians and Germans who inhabit the sanitized land of the rich and precluded. OH yes it's always amazing to see so much money and the way that they use it. Getting fleeced and being held hostage in this environment is par for the course as the outside is full of the great unwashed like me and there's always the chance that you're conscience might kick in. Strange for me to sit and watch these folk who inhabit this world. As many of you know i am broke nowadays so to feel like an cheap invader is rather fun.
It's hard to believe how many Russians there are here.
All of them dressed in the what the magazines define as western style but not an ounce of style between them.
Maybe it's me as I enjoy observing the redisculosity of the rich and the poor
both opposites of the same coin. I marvel at how sheltered from the realities of Egypt they are.
Don't get me wrong I am a very privileged person but i at least try to interact with the realities of the third world.
It seems that the rich have so many fortunate double standards that allow movement and oblivion to reign in their land.
I better stop rambling as i am sure that it's going off message.
Travel all be merry what ever end of the economic spectrum you are from.
Just spare a though for the realities of the folk whose land we walk on.

Arabia
I'm in this unique position of being able to
watch Arabia change at a massive rate.
Picture this; they still turn the music from all the tacky bars here
off so that the folk can here the mosques call to prayer.
There aren't many devout folk here but the few there are
drop a lot and kneel down and start praying to mecca.
I watched one guy who was praying and his mobile went off.
He stops his prayer, gets out his cell and then reads his text message.
sends a small one back and the carries on.
They used to say that Istanbul is where east meets west
but now its all over us and the ancient ways will find it very hard
to survive when Maya is all around us.
fascinating

camel shit road
I went to see friends tonight in there lovely small home away from here further north.
the only address i had was camel shit road. So, armed with that info i set off in the dark
flagged a taxi down and went for it. He took me down some dark alley and pointed up the dark street
and groaned hashish.
I said nope camel shit road.
He looked at me and said walk up there and left camel shit road.
I gave him a dollar and walked off into the darkness only to startle
half a dozen camels that were moored by the bedhu.
After five minutes of guessing and almost falling down several holes
(the place looks like a construction site) I found camel shit road and my friends house.
Gotta love camel shit road.
Theres a song in there somewhere...
what do you think?

Sometimes it's enough to sit and watch the ocean people life
the sky etc... In our busy lives in the west we very rarely get chance to stop
and see, or we are too scared of the silence?
After a time of floating in the infinite ocean
it's enough to just sit and watch.
To be and smile on thoughts that try and distract.

japanese buffet
Never miss a chance to grab the quality free food on offer.
last night was buffet for a large party of Japanese that have come here
to learn how to dive.
it's quite fascinating people watching as I'm the usual Brit who knows
very little language other than Yorkshire and wee bit of perverted American.
Anyway, it was fun eating all sorts of fried veg that the dangerous kitchen had
cooked up in the day. It's amazing what you can do with a few gas hobs and
diseased cutlery.
The rest of the evening was sat by the ocean just
talking to a fellow traveller (good to see Americans here)
about travel and the changes that have happened world peace and the
mess that our respective countries have made in this area.
i always like to inform folk about the war criminal Churchill
as well as bush and Blair and the rest of the greed heads.

the dangerous kitchen
Yes folks i am flying by the arse end of my pants out here
I decided to cook an omelet and break all my own rules and walk round the back
where the Egyptians cook.
Oh dear oh dear. fucking world war three fly festival with shite on every
item and on the olde work surface( sorry that's piece of wood with dead
goat remains in it!) It was basically a disease waiting to spread but my trustee American friend and i decided to take it on and make a feast.
The Egyptians looked on s we worked out that 7 eggs are needed for 2 people
and that the gas bottles don't explode of you light them quickly from the side.
They were preparing a feast so it was a good thing that we only had a small
weird looking omelet to make. I loaded mine with hot sauce and ketchup
just to give it the blast that it needed as we could n't nuke the thing in any mic afterwards.
God it's good to live like a king..
If i make it back there shall be more
lets hope that the famous stomach keps me safe

friendship desert
Last night was rather a lovely time.
I got chance to catch up with some old friends of mine
who live just north of here in a quieter part of the coast.
Peter,my host, calls it camel shit road.
Lotta her husband and her boy robin live in a lovely small house
alongside a few other refugees who turned up last night.
It was so nice to be in there cosy little house and spend time with like minded folk
on the road. (although it happens by chance each day it's always nice when you have known folk
for some time and they meet you on the road.)
We spent a few hrs just talking and catching up and laughing at
the cat and dogs in their small oasis by the sea.
Lotta and her friend Linda are free divers and they teach here
when they aren't competing.
www.lottaericson.com
have a look. I'm not sure what the discipline is but Lotta
holds various medals and records for apnea.
so after i had eaten My fill and talked till late
i blasted back to the front of dahab to watch the stars and look to the west.
i hope it stops snowing in Jordan as i don't really do snow in deserts.

jaques back

Well folks
today was the day to get back in the water and see whats changed
so i went round to some very good Swedish Friends who live and work out here and had the morning with them before they kitted me out with the necessary wet suite and weight belt. I am getting a bit softer in the cold water now.
Then i walked for ten minutes away from the Muppet's that drink beer and shout madness
to a place up from dahab called eel garden(famous for eels) small eels that is.
The sea was rather rough today and strangely the wind had changed direction,
so it was nice to get in the water and be the only snorkeler in the water.
after battling waves for a good ten minutes I swam back in and transferred down a little
to a place a little bit more sheltered. Still alone in the water.
I always look for a fin as it's something that i used to see when i was a boy down here.
often I'd chase the Napoleon fish out and spend the afternoon with the manta further down the coast.
Now it's never going to happen as many of them have left for quieter areas.
Always makes me think of the joke about two sharks following the divers.
one says to the other
whatever you do don't eat that fucker with the tank on his back it makes you fart!
anyway I always try and go out a bit so I'm alone and look out towards Saudi.
away from the madness of dahab its so peaceful and the blue both up and below is rather
magical. One of my fav colours out there.
If you have never done it then believe me getting lost in the blue is rather strange and unique.
go and watch the movie the big blue immediately!
Amway after realising how out of shape i am i finned out against the wind and low and behold within ten feet of the shore there was a small speckled moray eel. what a lovely chap he just looked at me.
Over the years I have developed a quiet detachment with nature. Just sit and glide and observe.
I see so many folk flapping around when all that's need is to glide and listen to the surf.
After a small amount of time the fish just accept you and you can watch them at work eating and working the reef
in all its many magnificent ways.
anyway after while of fining i did what i loved . turned my back to the surf and glided over the reef.
if you relax and let the water take you it will gently bring you back into the shore with less than an inch or two separating you from the coral. It's a bit like hang gliding. yippee
butterfly fish
clown fish
puffer fish that always entertain
angel fish
parrot fish
on and on it went
just gliding over the reef
letting them all just carry on underneath me almost like a passenger.
It also helps as the fish here are More accustomed to the surf and less startled with
a giant fool in spandex coming towards them.
then just as i thought I had failed in my quest the lion fish I had been seeking emerged ever so briefly from
a hidden rock and then darted back in. It was a little rough for them today so I was lucky to have spotted one.
I turned around and hid behind the rock and after a few minutes it came back out
this image is what she looked like.
beautiful and deadly but ever so majestic in the water.
then as i waited she came out for awhile had a look and then darted back.
worth coming here just for the little time i had with it.
there are many many here. Very nice indeed.
After that i just sat in the shallows smiling and playing in the small water.
As i was coming in smiling I was roped into
helping on a dive course for some rescue certification.
more fun as I tried to make the hurt diver laugh and stop pretending to be distressed.
Ahhhh
well its all good fun
if you haven't snorkelled then
get your tits out to a reef and do it.
more soon

A better kip and a blue sky can give it a bit of whoooof.
Well it's a tad warmer but not the heady heat i wanted
but it's not a problem really. i spent the other day talking to
a German about travelling in the early seventies.
when you get chance to sit with an older chap like that
its fascinating to just sit and learn.
He used to drive convoys of trucks down into Senegal through
morocco, west Africa and the rest. image 15 tonners loaded up with
like minded fools just out for the pleasure in the day before lonely planet heads
dominated the scene. through the Sahara and on into west Africa where it all gets
a little bit weird and the roads turn to bush and the folk turn all odd and slavery is not long dead.

I have just come back from watching england pummel scotland
rather odd to see them on form again!
Today I walked out of the town
something that you could once do in 2 mins now takes a good ten
as they have developed so much of the area and desert around here
soon it will be corridor developement all the way along the fron like
costa del red sea. i'm thinking about this in a balanced way and can see
that in a few ways it has brought somethings to the area
but it really lacks sustainability. too many make it rich schemes and no regulation
with the bribes always going to the greed heads
so its run away developement and the reef suffers along with the culture
but i'm aware that we can't procrastinate
the cairo mafia have this place all stitched up so it would take
a big bribe from some billionaire to get something done here
anyway i ramble
tonight i saw a huge storm over Saudi
very interesting as i was stood in sunlight watching
a huge rainstorm and lightening blasting over the desert
very intersting to watch it as it always seems
like a weird anomaly to me. bit like heat and ice.
anyway many folk sat and marvelled as the desert fought back with
rainbows and dust.
charming...
Still not overly warm so it was nice to go into the
pub/madhouse to warm up
bloody hear all the brits poissed and carrying on as usual
fuck i think benidorms almost here
alas i must sleep

Ive been coming through ever since and watching it change has become rather
interesting. sadly it seems to have gone to the dogs as now when i walk along the front
its selling fish and chips and an off licence has appeared?
Yeah i know fuck?
theres the purple and pink rinse brigade and there are so many folk here
who would have been down the road in sharm some ten yrs ago.
so it's catering for
Russians
Japanese
Germans
and some Brits?
hmmm
never actually seen so many Russians and Japanese in one place!
the cuisine is following it also1
the beach, which was a small haven away from the Cairo greed heads has now been commandeered
by the rich land owners and its all a bit sad really.
Still it s almost cheap and I'm in a reasonable place for 2GB a night
big spender hey
Saudi is looking very deserted and attractive to someone like me
shame its for rich folk and a few remaining bedu
i may have to go to Jordan for a wee bit longer to get my dose of
the desert away from the larger heads etc...
hmmmm
well much more soon
when Ive done some more research
Bo
p.s. the cats are very fast out here
and have decided to put the diving back a while.
snorkeling tomorrow i hope!

the moon saves the day
It always amazes me that the Arabs who run the taxi's for
the hr long trip to Dahab think that i was born in stupid ville.
I got the usual $100 quotes for the joy of a mad taxi dash to
dahab. Of course I laughed and walked off to the next guy.
Eventually I got some guy who told me $30, got the cab, came back
wanted 35 I got out demanded $30 and then got back in. he then stopped
for the next passengers and i got out told him he was a lying cheat where upon he
got back in the car told me $30 and we drove off into the night. That is till we got to
the next gas station where he told me to give him $30 and get into a mini bus.
I told him to go and take the next moray eel up the ass and then bargained with the next guy
who proved much more reliable.
So we are in the Sinai!
it's an amazing place when lit by moonlight.
cold and crenelated it looks like the mars images that you may have seen.
barren and cold. Very cold as we whistled past the wadi's that line the road.
The road has become as good as any western road which is a good and a bad thing.
before, when it was a dirt road folk took a little more care and didn't speed.
Now it's a racing course for all the Young Arabs that live here.
For those of you who have never been to Egypt you wont know
about there custom of blinding everyone when they get near.
In the west we try and dip our full beam before we get near one another
so we don't dazzle each other in the dark. here they do the opposite and blind one another when they
get within spitting distance. I looked at my driver when he was doing this and told him they used to drive by
moonlight on this road. he agreed it was a thing that used to happen and he still does sometimes.
Then promptly turned the lights off and we rattled along for a while till I thought it best if
he put them on as there seemed to be a few idiots on the highway doing the same.
after about 35 Min's we were nearing dahab
and making good speed. coming over a small hill at 80 mph
it was rather novel to see that some fool policeman had put a road block up on our
side of the road and also blocked the other road with his jeep.
Brown pant time for many
but luckily I had a great driver who saw it
swerved off into the desert and managed to hold it as we
smashed off into the sand and dirt that surrounds it.
After we had got back i gave him a pack on the back.
nice one mate. good driving,. If we would have hit that
concrete bolder it would have been game over.
he smiled looked a bit lost and we carried on into the night
as if nothing had happened.
it's those small things in life that can change
so quickly and yet so permanently.
ha ha
you have to laugh
and live.

moonlight flight
The trouble with gypo, hobo air is it's full of folk on cheap holidays who have never left blighty.
there's nothing wrong with that but it has it's accompanying madness as many have never left the UK before.
the result is a plane full of half pissed folk trying to sing there way to the sun in a cramped plane
that sells everything and it's dog at top dollar prices.
anyway, I read for most of the trip and managed to doze for a microsecond and eat the food i had brought with me.nasty stuff that airline shite.
Landing at sharm is always a fun thing!
the pilot suddenly believes he is a world war 2 fighter pilot and also a racing driver all at once.
folk are being sick and throwing up. then the stewardess says remember to not drink the water and be safe in the heat buy our bottled water and everyone starts to panic and drink like alcoholics. gotta love those cheap sun seeking Brits(like me? ha)
The madness at Sharm airport hasn't got any better
four conveyor belts with no sign or people telling you where
anything is. not even the flight number.
folk who where rather indignant and arrogant in gatwick acted
like sheep and lost rats here. hmmmm
it took me an hr and some cunning detective work but i got my bags and hot footed it into the
car park for some hard haggling.

cluster fuck
Gatwick airport hasn't been graced by my presence in a few moons
and I'm pretty glad to say that. Basically it's a cluster fuck that's not fit for purpose.
I shall say much more when I have hit the hey tomorrow.
But if you are thinking of going there in the next century make alternative plans as it's
like the arse end of hell.
I have fixed the comments and you can all leave priceless gems
for me.
tomorrow will be here soon
I landed and am here
snooping

it's funny how england always tried to hold onto me and get the best. Everything seemed to go well getting the train to london until arather irrate looking cockney asked for my ticket. I had 4 tickets for two jorneys so i just handed them all thinking iut was going to be a sure thing. Silly me, the folk at BR are much smarter than that.
Sorry mate but if you cant give me your ticket its 87.50 pound.
what
wheres yout ticket?
I just gave you four?
Not the right ones!
Hey?Its's got my seat number and my name on it.
yeah but i need the ticket.
well heres the computer printout of my order.(i'd booked them online and picked them up from a machine in leeds earlier.)
No good i need the ticket.
I have only those FOUR tickets
How do you want to pay?
What?
CAsh or card?
Look we must be able to resolve this? At this point he is already writing the ticket out.
Give me an unpaid fair slip.
Can't don't have em anymore.
Come back give me five mins to think.
Nope I dont want to.
fucking unbelievable. Is there no way around this at all.
Look if you come back in five minutes I'm going to be here not fucking running off through the windows and onto the roof we are going at 70 miles an hr.
Cash then is it?
I gave him the money all$ 170 of it for a 2hr train ride.
Letters shall be written but i think i have miore chance having sex with the pope
than getting anything out of British Rail.
I would like to dedicate this post to my old mate and confident
Shaun Monaghan who put me up
shared the love of curry on brick lane
and also cut the worlds second worst fart in the car back and knew nothing of it
actually blaming me and his cold. Lovely chap I had a nice night.
